Sports Athletes and the Popularity of CBD

Figure 1 CBD oil has proven to be effective in a number of ways

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its banned substances list in 2018 and athletes across the sporting spectrum rejoiced after years of campaigning to be able to use cannabinoids to deal with inflammation and pain and help with anxiety issues,

There is still some controversy surrounding the subject as less-informed pundits consider whether CBD can affect or enhance performance. The reaction that users could experience may not help with deciding where to spend your sportsbook bonuses, but CBD has helped some of your favorite sports athletes to perform to their best abilities.

How CBD Helps Athletes

CBD is beneficial for sports athletes in a variety of ways. Some may be more useful for particular sports, but just about every athlete could theoretically use CBD. With the difference between success and failure so minimal, athletes push their bodies to the limit to get results. That will cause inflammation – which is needed to a point. But excessive and chronic inflammation is obviously bad and CBD reduces the problem.

When the inflammation is so bad that it causes injury, CBD can also help. It has been proven to be effective in pain relief, especially with muscle soreness. Helping athletes sleep is also part of the CBD plus point list. That allows the athletes to repair and renew their bodies – and also reduce any anxiety ahead of big games.

American football is a sport where the players receive a physical battering every day. From practice to the games, it is no surprise that careers do not last that long. That is why it is also not a surprise that American footballers are some of the most vociferous supporters of CBD.

Megan Rapinoe

It is not just the battering rams of American football that have turned to CBD though. Megan Rapinoe is one of the biggest names in women’s football and has won World Cups and Olympic gold with the US national team. But she has also experienced more than her fair share of injury problems.

She ruptured her left ACL twice while still at college – and then ruptured her right ACL during the 2015 World Cup. She worked her way back to the very top thanks to a healthy eating regime and making sure she had a good night’s sleep. But, since the 2018 WADA announcement, she has also relied on CBD for pain relief.

Tiger Woods is regarded by many to be the best golfer of all time. But in a sport that relies on such repetitive body movements, it is almost guaranteed that players will have to deal with pain and inflammation, at the very least. Woods has also had to deal with issues away from the golf course that will have caused anxiety and sleepless nights.

For a while it looked as if we had seen the last of Tiger Woods the champion. But he made an astonishing comeback from a bad back injury in 2019 – and credited CBD oil with his recovery. His use of CBD has extended his career at the top of the sport and he is a firm believer in its benefits.

What Happens Next with CBD?

CBD is perfectly legal for athletes to use, although they do need to make sure that the product and oils they are taking do not exceed the allowed amount of THC. But there is still something of a stigma associated with CBD and that could affect the athletes and their careers.

There is evidence that CBD can help athletes but with issues like this there is always the need for further study. That way the athletes that use CBD will not be accused of illegally enhancing their performance and also be safe in the knowledge that they are taking care of their body in order to excel at their chosen sport.
