A sprawling magic mushroom operation, the largest ever discovered in New South Wales, has been dismantled after Sydney police uncovered a clandestine lab in a Pyrmont apartment. The raid, part of a larger crackdown on a suspected drug syndicate, led to four arrests and the seizure of a significant quantity of illicit substances.
The operation began early yesterday when police arrested two men, aged 45 and 30, at Sydney Olympic Park around 8:50 a.m. Both were charged with multiple drug supply offences. Shortly after, a 28-year-old man was taken into custody at a West Ryde café and similarly charged.
At 9:50 a.m., officers executed a search warrant at a Pyrmont residential apartment. There, they discovered what authorities described as the largest magic mushroom lab ever uncovered in NSW. The lab was reportedly used to produce psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms.
A 45-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and charged with drug supply offences. Like the others, she was denied bail and is set to appear in court today.
In addition to the lab, police conducted coordinated searches across several Sydney suburbs, including Oatlands, Campsie, Epping, Rydalmere, and West Ryde. They seized a significant quantity of prohibited substances, including 100 bags of magic mushrooms, cocaine, and methylamphetamine.
Authorities allege the group was involved in a large-scale drug supply network distributing multiple substances throughout Sydney.
“This is the largest magic mushroom production site we’ve encountered in a residential setting,” NSW Police stated, emphasizing the dangers associated with clandestine drug labs in urban environments. They also noted the increasing prevalence of psilocybin and the need for robust enforcement to curb its illegal production and distribution.
Are Magic Mushrooms a Dangerous Drug or a Misunderstood Medicine?
Dangerous—they should remain illegal.
Misunderstood—they have therapeutic potential.
I’m undecided—need more research.
